A Sunny Day In Reykjavík

What blogs should I be reading? Recommendations, please!

We need something to read!

Once upon a time in the days before Facebook, I had a little blog. My friends had blogs too. I read theirs and they read mine and we all commented on each others’. It was fun. Then everyone got busy and joined Facebook and don’t blog anymore. Now I have nothing to read. Okay, I have millions of blogs to read, but I have choice anxiety. I need suggestions.

What kind of blogs do I like? Well, off the top of my head, I like parenting blogs (like the uber-popular Dooce and Girl’s Gone Child, etc.) and design blogs (Design Sponge is amazing). Anything with pretty pictures of things people have made. Knitting blogs are awesome, even though I almost never knit anything myself. Some smaller blogs I’ve found and love include Saipua (so many beautiful flowers!), Vaka Design (sadly she hasn’t blogged in ages. Come back, Vaka!), Sýstraseiður (this one’s in Icelandic, but it has lots of pretty pictures), and Litla Skvís (a friend of a friend who makes beautiful things. It’s from Iceland but in English.) I’m sure there are others I’m forgetting!

Having said all that, I’m totally open-minded and will read blogs on just about any topic. Personal, feminist, expat, style, entertainment, photography, travel…it’s all good!

TL;DR: So dear readers, can anyone recommend some super awesome blogs? What are your favourites? And if you have a blog yourself, tell me about it!

I’m Sarah, an Australian woman living in Iceland with my partner and two young daughters “Raven” and “Luna” (names changed to protect the innocent). 1. Thanks for reading and commenting on my blog yesterday! :o) musefusion.blogspot.com

  2. There is a blog called The Icelandic Experience. This young lady has a dream, to live in Iceland for a year. She’s very excited and very close to her goal. She’s in Belgium. My blogs are half spiritual teaching and half angora goat. Not sure that’s your cup of tea, so I point you to The Icelandic Experience. :-)

    • Hi Sheri! I love your goats! They’re so very sweet and expressive. :) I wish we had room for animals in our little apartment. Thanks for the other blog suggestion as well. I looked her up. It’s funny how some people fall so head over heels in love with this place!

      • It is funny…But isn’t Iceland supposed to be the best place in the world to live? Thanks! I love my goats too, they are my world. You could have a sugarglider! They are cool. had one for 6 years! If you play with the as babies, then you can carry them with you. :-)

      • Sugar gliders are SO cute, but I don’t think they’re allowed here because there are super tight regulations on pets. We may have to settle for a goldfish until we have room for a dog. ;) I had so many pets growing up and I miss it!

      • awwe, well, how bout salt water fish, in a tank…got wonderful stuff available these days. urchins, seahorses, etc

      • That would actually be really nice. I love aquariums. They’re so peaceful to look at.

      • I bet the prices have come down by now. Theres also birds too, if they let you have those. I always stop in at the bird station when I’m at Petsmart. They want attention and love. Sorry, just now found your reply. :-)

      • Yeah, it’s funny as when you don’t live somewhere you can just ignore all the bad things about it. :) Most of the blogs I read are Iceland related so I will skip those, but two other favourites are: http://epa82.wordpress.com – very funny lady who is a new mum and http://maturestudenthanginginthere.wordpress.com – mature student/carer/positive inspiration/again a funny lady.

      • Yes, countries are definitely different in reality than when they’re far-off a dream. I still love Iceland after nearly 10 years but I’m definitely acquainted with some of the difficulties of living here. I should probably right a blog entry about that, hehe.
Thanks so much for the suggestions, I check them out. I’m both a new(ish) mother and an OU student, so you have me pegged. ;)

      • Actually, an entry about some of the limitations would be quite interesting! I already know there are some things that would get on my nerves about living there and would be curious to hear your perspective.

  3. Sarah, hello there. I’m pleased you stopped by my blog. Like you I am also a student, but juggle keeping up with a 17 year old son and my 95 year old mother in law who lives with us. I’ve only been blogging for just over a year and I find it both a sanctuary and a place where I can tell it like it is. I struggle with study – I’m 45 and studying for my degree and I also struggle with the fact that 17 years ago they allowed me to take my son out of hospital without giving me a manual. I’ve been trying to catch up ever since. I live in the Highlands of Scotland and I juggle too many plates every day. My blog is a mish mash of all that happens. I am always honest in my writing and really it is only my sense of humour that pulls me through. Since I’ve been blogging I have found that humour in others. I’m very touched that one of our blogging buddies directed you to my blog. I look forward to reading your posts and feel free to pop into mine. Jacqueline
