Drawings I’ll probably never finish

This post is inspired by some other blog entries I’ve read recently. Presley at haunting olivia shared some ‘bad’ art (which I think is actually pretty good), and Cassy at knit the hell out confessed about her piles of “UFOs” (unfinished objects). I love seeing people’s work in an unpolished state, whether it’s a work in progress, a quick sketch, or finished pieces that just didn’t quite work out for one reason or another.

Seeing as this is *supposed* to be my art blog and I haven’t had time to draw anything new recently, I figure I might as well share some of my own UFOs.

(Please forgive the not-so-great image quality; I don’t have a scanner. The grey splodges you see on some of the pictures are shadows cast by a dirty window, not parts of the drawings.)

This first one was something I started a couple of years ago to hang up in Raven’s room. My plan was to do a mixed-media drawing/collage. I was going to draw tree branches with cut-paper leaves, and some paper flowers down the bottom.

I quite like it, but it came out a bit stiff-looking. The rough preliminary sketch I did had more life & movement to it:

Still, I think it’s nice and want to finish it.

This second sketch is based on a photo of Keith Richards’ hands. I did it in…2003? after years of not drawing. I did it to see whether I could still draw. It wasn’t intended to be used for anything, just a practice sketch.

In a similar vein, this next one is drawn from a photo of Iggy Pop (I love Iggy Pop!). Again, I wasn’t planning on using it for anything, just an exercise. I had to stop because the level of detail was making my eyes freak out. I’ll need new glasses before I attempt something like this again!

Back to drawings for children, recognise this? It’s from Madeline, Raven’s favourite book. Not much to say about this one. Again, it was supposed to go on Raven’s bedroom wall.

“To the tiger in the zoo, Madeline just said, “Pooh-pooh.”

And one last one for (and of) Raven. I did it when she was around 18 months old and at the peak of her cat obsession. It looks better in person – the light was terrible. I need to make the colour a bit more intense, but otherwise it’s more or less finished.

So those are my unfinished pieces. Now I want to know, what do you have in your unfinished projects pile? (It doesn’t have to be art, it can be anything!) And what’s keeping you from finishing it?

Quick sketch: buttercups

OMG, two blogs in one day! I’m sure I’ll calm down a bit once the newness has worn off.

I’m starting a sketchbook for quick doodles. Luna naps really lightly (unless she’s sleeping on me, which she does a lot!), and only for 30ish minutes at a time, so there’s no time to mess around. It’s just 1…2…3…DRAW.

This is a pencil sketch I started the other day. The flowers had been picked a few days earlier so they were pretty sad & droopy when I drew them.

The set-up

The rough lead pencil part took about 2 minutes and the colour on the buttercup took about 20 minutes.

A 25 minute nap = this.

I’ve always hated showing anyone my rough sketches, so posting this stuff is an exercise in not being so precious about it.

Next time I’m going to try to sketch while Luna’s awake. I’m pretty sure she’s just going come over and try to eat my pencil, but it’s worth a try.

“I see you’re trying to work. Allow me to grab that and drool on it for you. You’re welcome.”

Why hello there!

Welcome to my new blog! I’ve been wanting somewhere other than Facebook to share pictures and updates, so here I am. I’m still on Facebook following along and commenting, but I’ll be keeping most of my photos over here from now on. Which means you’ll have to visit if you want to see cute baby pics…ha!

I’m also trying to get back into drawing and making things, and this will serve as a kind of online art journal. It’s not super easy to find the time to draw when you have two small kids, so I’m going to keep my goals realistic and shoot for one sketch per week, even if that’s just a 5 minute doodle done whilst the baby throws Cheerios on the floor. I have a frustrating tendency to be very all-or-nothing when it comes to drawing, so I’m trying loosen up and just enjoy being creative when I can. Hopefully I’ll be able to make some time for some bigger projects too. I love watching other people’s work unfold from concept to finish, so I think it’ll be fun to document that process for myself.

On a side-note, I’ll be using pseudonyms for my kids here to hopefully make them more difficult to Google. My 4-year-old will be known as ‘Raven’, and my wee bebe will be ‘Luna’. (Geddit? No? Nevermind…) Or maybe some other names if I think of something better. If you mention them in my comments, pretty please don’t use their real names. And please do comment. I love comments!

Anyway, thanks for stopping by. I have several posts up my sleeve and a huge backlog of photos to share, so check in again soon!

P.S. Do any of you guys have a blogs? If so then please share, I’d love to see them!
